Dear Senator Curtis
Writing to our Senators
I have lived in Utah for a long time, 34 years or so. The entire time I have lived here, there has been a Republican super majority in both houses of the State Legislature and Republicans in Congress and the Senate, except on only very few occasions that a Democrat snuck through. That was quickly stopped by some quick gerrymandering. Utah simply cannot stomach Democrats. Republicanism in Utah has morphed to fit Republicanism in Washington and so now Republicanism in Utah is the basest form of Trump sycophant, MAGA style Republicanism. Utahns in general have easily made the move to this position, despite having to give up some of their most cherished principles to do so. Or did they? Perhaps the majority of Utahns always had despicable beliefs and a suspect moral compass all along and were just keeping it under wraps and so Trump’s “ideas” appealed to them. It is hard to stomach the thought that the majority of Utahns are racist and misogynist and despise all (non-white) immigrants to this country but there is evidence that these are the beliefs of lots of us here in Utah. If you pledge allegiance to a politician, president and so on, you are indicating to the rest of us that you endorse their beliefs.
Now I am retired, I have time to write to my Congressional reps. Here is my latest letter to one of our Congressional delegation, Senator John Curtis, UT:
Senator Curtis, I appreciate your prompt response to my letter earlier this week. This indicates that you are prepared to at least acknowledge your constituents, unlike the most of the Utah Congressional delegation. I wrote to urge you not to support the nomination of Todd Blanche as Attorney General of the United States of America. In your reply you said that you had “robust discussions” with Blanche and were pleased with “his receptivity to concerns raised” and “his understanding of the issues that you and your colleagues emphasized.” As a result, you will vote to support him.
Here’s what is going to happen if Blanche becomes Attorney General: he will bring countless (more) illegal cases against the President’s “enemies.” Doubtless starting with bringing criminal charges emerging from the farcical show trial that Senator Paul directed against Dr. Fauci. Blanche was the President’s fixer and as Attorney General he will continue to be so. When will you or one of your Republican colleagues in the Senate recognize that in your vote of approval, you continue to rubber stamp the actions of an out of control Presidency? Why not make an effort to reign in the President?
For example, you could stem the spending of ungodly amounts of the people’s money on ridiculous pet projects all over DC. However, the establishment of Blanche as Attorney General appears to include signing off on a deal to make the President immune from any financial audits, which means that any financial wrongdoing goes unpunished, because it will never be investigated. I find it hard to believe that you and your colleagues in the Senate don’t see a pattern here and don’t see problems with the pattern you see. We are not lurching towards dictatorship, we are already in the throws of it. If you blithely vote to support the President’s unhinged actions, you are voting against Americans and against the stability of the democratic process in this country that took so long to establish.
Yours,
Steve Downes
